Queensland's Transport Minister has welcomed news that the second stage of a major central Queensland road project will go ahead.
The $62 million Yeppen North project at Gracemere officially opened yesterday.
Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss also announced the second part of the flood mitigation project, the $300 million Yeppen South bridge, will begin before Christmas.
"This project will build a 1.6 kilometre long bridge over about a three-kilometre section, connecting the Yeppen roundabout to the Burnett Highway turn-off," he said.
"This is another heavily flood-prone area on the Bruce Highway and this project will eliminate another of the flood-prone areas of the Bruce Highway."
State Transport Minister Scott Emerson says it is great news.
"People in Rocky are sick and tired of seeing this area flood and this is the first part of solving that problem, seeing the Yeppen North open today is a milestone but just as important is the announcement that Yeppen South will commence shortly, with that finalised in 2016," he said.
He says the State Government would consider a proposal for a flood levee if it came forward.
"We'll have a look at it. [Mayor] Margaret [Strelow] is a great advocate for Rocky. I'm sure she'll continue to lobby both the Federal Government and the State Government on that project," he said.
Mr Truss says the Federal Government supports flood levee studies for Rockhampton but has not indicated if it would be willing to fund construction.
He says studies are needed into the implications of any levee.
"The Coalition announced we would provide funding to help undertake engineering studies so that the people of Rockhampton can make a decision about whether they want to construct the flood levee and what it's impact is likely to be on the city," he said.
"So as soon as the Rockhampton city and the community is ready to proceed with that study, our funding is available."
