Woman in labour rescued from flood

Thursday November 20, 2008 - 11:46 EDT

A pregnant woman who was trapped by rising flood waters in the Gold Coast hinterland overnight has given birth to a baby boy.

Liza Norton was 38 weeks pregnant and went into labour during last night's storms.

Her partner Doug Shelton was driving them to hospital when rising flood waters trapped them at Tamborine.

The couple sheltered at a nearby farm.

Ambulance spokesman Kev Youlden says they had to wait four hours for the floodwaters to subside.

"It was a good outcome and we got them off to the hospital in time," he said.

Mr Shelton says their flood story has a happy ending.

"His name is Ned and he's absolutely fantastic," he said.

"He's quietly asleep in his mother's arms now."

Mr Shelton says his partner Liza remained calm throughout the ordeal.

"She was absolutely fantastic - she was calm, she was confident it was all going to work out okay and that was great because that helped the rest of us," he said.

"We just thought it was going to work out and that's what exactly what happened."

Parts of the Gold Coast received more than 100 millimetres of rain in the past day.
