While northern parts of the country have experienced unseasonably warm temperatures, winter is business as usual in the south. Strong cold fronts crossing the southern states are a common occurrence during most winters and today winter threw another one across the southeast. Winds ahead of the front have brought gales to coastal parts of SA, VIC and TAS, while severe weather warnings were issued for the Snowy Mountains of NSW and half of VIC. Kilmore Gap saw gusts up to 89km/h this afternoon as winds funneled through the valley. Melbourne Airport also reported gusts of 89 km/h this morning while most people were just waking up. The gusty weather has continued all day with gusts up to 85 km/h reported this afternoon, making it the windiest day in nearly two months. Even Olympic Park recorded gusts to 63 km/h. While temperatures in Melbourne did reach the forecast 12 degrees, the wind has made it feel much cooler. All day, apparent temperatures at Olympic park have only ranged between three and five degrees. The coming week looks to continue these typical winter conditions. Friday will probably feel like a different season with much lighter winds and much more sunshine. A couple of fronts at the weekend will bring a return of unsettled weather leading to a cold start to next week.
