Frost will remain widespread across southeastern Australia during the next few nights with temperatures dropping to near record levels for this early in the year. On Thursday morning overnight temperatures plummeted more than 10 degrees below average across parts of the southeast inland with frost developing in all districts of Tasmania and Victoria and also through much of inland NSW. Hobart woke to chilly one degree, their coldest April morning in 46 years. Melbourne's three degrees was their coldest in 56 years while Echuca dipped to zero for the first time in April in over 50 years. Charlotte Pass in the NSW Alps once again had the national low, dropping to a severe minus 12 degrees, cold enough to be a national record for April if they hadn't dropped to minus 13 on Wednesday. Friday morning will be just as cold across most of NSW and eastern Victoria but an increase in cloud and wind will bring slight relief elsewhere. Nights will remain cold through the weekend and early next week due to a stagnant high pressure system set to linger in the Bight for at least the next seven days.
