Windy weather wreaks havoc in Sydney

Thursday August 23, 2012 - 17:07 EST

Strong winds are causing some disruptions across Sydney, after one of its warmest winter days on record.

Around 3,000 homes across Sydney are without power after northerly winds gusting between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour hit the metropolitan area.

At the height of the storm there were about 12,000 homes without power.

The main areas affected are Pymble, Peakhurst Heights, Lugarno, Jannali, Epping North, Lindfield, South Turramurra and Revesby.

Trains on the Northern and Airport and East Hills lines are affected.

The State Emergency Service says it has received around 200 calls from the Blue Mountains and expects more as the winds pass across Sydney.

Kylie Yates from Ausgrid says it could be some time before power is restored.

"We'll progressively restore power as soon as we can safely do so, but in some areas we've had large trees come on powerlines," she said.

"So our crews need to remove those trees, sometimes replace those power poles and restring the power lines, so some areas will take well into the evening."
