Winds continue to batter Southestern Australia

Sam Terry, Wednesday July 2, 2008 - 18:06 EST

Gale force winds have again battered southeastern Australia today following the trend observed in the last week. These strong gales are associated with a series of cold fronts that have swept across Bass Strait over the last few days, and have caused heavy showers and snowfalls over much of Tasmania and Victoria.

Wollongong today had a maximum wind gust of 111 kph at 9am, the highest in the last two years. In Victoria early this morning, Wilsons Promontory received wind gusts peaking at 141 kph, the highest in 3 years.

Meanwhile in TAS, Flinders Island had a gust of 120 kph, the highest in 6 years. Maatsuyker Island had the country's strongest wind gust today at 143 kph. This however, falls short of the 180 kph wind gusts observed at Hogan Island on the 26th of June.

Tomorrow, winds will pick up again over TAS but should start to ease by evening.
