Widespread frost across the southeast

Widespread frost across the southeast
A high pressure ridge will develop quickly in the wake of the front that brought snow to VIC, TAS and NSW today, causing a cold snap overnight. Cool air will pool under this high pressure system, and as winds ease into this evening, temperatures will plummet. Across parts of the tablelands of NSW as well as over much of the Great Dividing Ranges in VIC and NSW, temperatures look to fall below zero tonight. Temperatures across parts of TAS could fall to as low as -6 degrees, such as around the Liaweenee area, whilst sub-zero conditions are likely for much of the plateau and ranges areas. Elevated parts of southeastern QLD are also a good chance to dip to near or a just a few degrees above zero, mostly likely around the Kingaroy, Dalby, Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi areas. Tunnack, Launceston, Hunter's Hill, Omeo, Goulburn, Braidwood, Glen Innes and Armidale are among some areas that will remain below one degree for several hours. The Applethorpe, Warwick and Oakey areas could spend several hours below four degrees. Moreover, the high pressure ridge that is responsible for cold night should linger across the weekend and into the working week. This will lead to a string of freezing overnight temperatures to parts of VIC, TAS and NSW. The result will be widespread frost in the mornings, severe in some areas and over several days. However, for those excited about today's widespread snowfalls, these overnight temperatures will help preserve some cover, especially around the Alpine region.
