With the September 2017 rainfall totals officially coming to a close at 9am CST, Uluru managed to get the best couple of days of rainfall since mid-April this year. A slow-moving surface trough and low pressure system, together with a deep upper trough, have led to persistent rainfall and thunderstorms over the central interior of the country since late Wednesday. For Ululru, the average number of rain days for September is 3.7, meaning that about 3 to 4 days of rain are expected, producing about 19mm of rainfall on average. Since Thursday this week the rain gauge has already picked up 42.4mm of rainfall, more than twice the long-term average, and the most September rainfall since the 72.4mm in 2010. A bit further east, Curtin Springs received even better rainfall, measuring 45.5mm at 9am local time, its best rainfall since January this year and its wettest September since 2010. The complex system is expected to clear the interior of the country over the next 24 hours, but is expected to lead to heavy and persistent rainfall over southern and southeast Queensland in coming days.
