Wet start for tropical QLD

Alex Krisman, Thursday January 15, 2009 - 17:24 EDT

Tropical cyclone Charlotte followed by persistent rainfall has kicked tropical QLD off to a wet start for the year.

Cairns, which received 278mm in a 24 hour period recently has climbed to a running total of 563mm for January, compared to the average of 385mm. Townsville has picked up 350mm so far, compared to a 265mm average, and Bowen 262mm, far above the 156mm norm.

Looking ahead into the next week, wet conditions can be expected to prevail with monsoonal conditions and moist onshore winds poised to deliver further high falls. So, at this stage, it looks like tropical QLD can expect a wetter than average January.
