The chance of showers and thunderstorms is increasing over the Northern Territory's Top End this week, reminding locals in tropical far northern Australia that the 'wet season' has almost arrived. Northern Australia is in the final month of the dry season, which runs from May to September. The rest of the year is broadly identified as the west season, although October and November are referred to as build-up months. The build-up is when moisture starts to increase across the northern tropics leading up to the arrival of monsoon conditions around December. A trough of low pressure is moving northwards over the NT this week, causing humidity to increase across the Top End. Over the next few days, showers and thunderstorms will become more active and could even affect Darwin. At this stage, the best chance of rain in Darwin will be over the weekend or early next week. Darwin has only recorded rainfall on three occasions during the last four months, which included a 103 day dry spell from late May to earlier this month. This may seem impressive, but it is the dry season after all.
