Water shortage set to hit Brisbane suburbs

Authorities have stockpiled bottled water in some Brisbane suburbs which are facing a water shortage.

It is due to flood-related problems at the city's main treatment plant.

Residents in the greater Brisbane area were yesterday urged to conserve dwindling water supplies, but instead consumption has increased.

Robin Lewis from Queensland Urban Utilities says that is hampering work at the Mount Crosby Water Treatment Plant, which has been struggling with excessive silt and sediment in the water.

He says suburbs including Tarragindi, Camp Hill, Carina, Mt Gravatt, Tingalpa, Rocklea and Oxley could lose supply early this afternoon.

"This is a quantity, not a quality issue," he said.

"Should the situation worsen we will announce where people can get bottled water from."

There are already shortages of bottled water at supermarkets around Brisbane.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says people should not be hosing paths or filling pools.

He says people shouldn't over-react.

"It is simple about applying common sense water conservation measures and we'll get through it," he said.

"So no panic - just common sense."
