WA tastes scorching summer early

Sam Terry, Wednesday October 15, 2008 - 16:09 EDT

The heat has really been turned up in Western Australia with the last two days topping well above average.

After half a month of mostly below average temperatures, western and southern parts of WA sky-rocketed to at least 9 above today. Perth city topped at 32 degrees, nine above average and the hottest October day in eight years. Perth Airport reached 33, as did nearby Pearce. This was the hottest day for many places in the area in 6 months.

The soaring temperatures come as hot air is funnelled south with a trough. The trough has been deepening over the last few days, triggering the odd bit of thunder inland, and bringing a warm day yesterday as well.

This afternoon, the trough has moved further south and east, allowing humid air to breach the coastal towns. Perth dropped around 5 degrees in an hour with the change.

Tomorrow looks to be much cooler, with Perth forecast to hit 23.
