Victorians bracing for the big blow

Victorians bracing for the big blow
After a chilly day yesterday followed by a cold morning, the wild winds are set to lash Victoria. No one would have blamed Victorians for complaining about the weather this weekend. It was a cold day yesterday in Melbourne, with much of the city and surrounds at least five to seven degrees below average. Frankston and Ferny Creek were the coldest places in the region, only reaching 17 and 18 degrees respectively. Early risers in Rutherglen would have shivered through the coldest January morning in 14 years, with the mercury struggling to push over four degrees. In Wangaratta, it was a chilly five degrees this morning, making it the coldest January morning since 2009. It has been five years since Mildura has had a colder pair of mornings in January, with both Saturday and Sunday failing to reach above 11 degrees. The sunny Sunday skies will be replaced by cloud and showers as another gusty cold front sweeps through the state today, reaching central districts this afternoon. There is a Severe Weather Warning in place for the South West, Central and west and South Gippsland for damaging wind gusts with peak gusts possibly reaching 90km/h. Elevated and coastal areas within these districts are the highest risk of experiencing the strongest westerly winds. This front will also bring a colder airmass combined with gusty onshore winds in its wake, lingering into Monday and Tuesday with a few showers brushing the coast. Conditions will begin to clear on Wednesday with the mercury beginning to rise on Thursday, ahead of cracking weather to finish up the first week back at work.
