Parts of Victoria are on the alert for flash flooding as severe thunderstorms and heavy rain cross the state bringing a cool change.

The downpour in Melbourne came just after a lunchtime, a day after hot and dry conditions in the city, with temperatures topping 34 degrees Celsius.

Senior weather forecaster Dean Stewart said the state's alps were likely to receive snowfall over the weekend.

"There won't be any huge amounts on the ground, but nevertheless, a couple of snow flurries over the alpine areas on Saturday night," he said.

"Surprisingly it's not that unusual for Victoria to get some snow during the summer months, most summers we get one or two cold outbreaks that are cold enough to deliver some snow over the alpine areas."

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rain for the Melbourne area just before 2:00pm, covering Western Port and parts of Mornington Peninsula, as well as the city's south-east and outer-east.

Frankston North received 10 millimetres of rain in 10 minutes during the downpour, the bureau reported.

Mr Stewart said the severe storms had since moved away from Melbourne, but warnings remained for other parts of the state.

"We had some thunderstorms develop during the early afternoon, through parts of the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, particularly down through the south-eastern suburbs," he said.

"We did see some rainfall rates of around 5mm in as many minutes, and when we get rain falling at that rate, that's enough to cause some flash flooding.

"Whilst the Melbourne area is now clear of those storms, it's possible that we'll still see flash flooding through parts of Gippsland, also a slight chance of damaging winds and large hailstones."
