Victoria braces for severe winds
Brett Dutschke

Wind is starting to bring trees down in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria and it will get even windier tonight, according to weatherzone.com.au.
By nine o'clock this evening most of Melbourne and surrounds had recorded its second strongest winds of the year. Northerlies peaked at 102 km/h at Kilmore, 91 km/h at Mt Dandenong, 89km/h at St Kilda and 82 km/h in the city. The only other windier day this year was on April 2nd when there was widespread damage and dust and topsoil was transported all the way from the Mallee region.
Winds in the Melbourne area will peak close to midnight and again mid-morning when they shift more westerly once a cold front moves through. They will then ease below gale-force strength fairly rapidly in the afternoon.
There is a possibility of gusts exceeding 100km/h near the coast and on high ground and for dust storms.
