Victoria braces for heavy rain and wild winds

Alex Zadnik
A deepening low pressure system located to the southeast of Melbourne is going to bring a day of wild weather to much of Victoria, including the capital. The low pressure system was centred between Cape Schanck and Phillip Island on Friday morning and was very slow moving. A steady stream of rain on the rear flank of the low was swirling into central and northeastern Victoria, which will continue for most of the day due to the slow moving nature of this weather system. Rainfall totals of 30-50mm are likely today across eastern and southern suburbs of Melbourne, which may result in localised flash flooding and stream rises in surrounding catchments. Melbourne city averages 56mm of rain in the month of May, so it is possible that some suburbs will approach this mark. Even heavier falls of over 50mm are possible for areas to the east of Melbourne, including Western Port, Phillip Island, Wonthaggi, Labertouche and Leongatha. For elevated areas such as Mt Baw Baw, rain will fall as snow, with the potential for more than 30cm today. 10cm falls have already occurred across the larger alpine resorts of Mt Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek. All the precipitation today will set the scene for a horror afternoon for road travel, especially as winds increase through this period. With the low pressure system deepening further through today, there will be a corresponding boost to wind speeds and gusts. Wind gusts of 100km/h are likely across central and eastern Victoria during the afternoon and evening, as the cold southwest winds roar in from Bass Strait. Given the significant rainfall ahead of the wind, the likelihood of falling trees is greatly increased. The other significant weather today will be the cold, with Melbourne struggling to reach double digits for most of the day. The combination of cold, wet and windy conditions through regional Victoria has also prompted a warning to sheep graziers due to the high risk of lamb and sheep losses. The worst of the wind and rain will contract to East Gippsland during Saturday morning, with a general easing in conditions for the remainder of the state. A winter chill will however linger into Sunday for Victoria, even with a few breaks in the cloud and an easing in the winds.
