Tropical Cyclone Nathan to hit the NT

Tropical Cyclone Nathan to hit the NT
Communities in the Northern Territory are bracing for another cyclone as Tropical Cyclone Nathan approaches the Top End. The incredibly persistent Tropical Cyclone Nathan has now breached the Gulf of Carpentaria. While over these 30 degree waters, it is expected to intensify slightly into a category 2 and head towards the northeast Top End. Tropical Cyclone Nathan will begin impacting Groote Eylandt early Sunday morning with destructive wind gusts clocking in at 155 km/h. Areas from Port Roper to Nhulunbuy will feel these intense winds a bit later in the morning. Along with these winds, widespread torrential rain of about 60 mm should be expected along the Arnhem Land coast, with downpours as heavy as 100mm likely around Birany Birany. At this stage, Tropical Cyclone Nathan will weaken by Sunday afternoon as it glances the northeastern Top End, tracking close to the coast. The system looks to abate even further during Monday before approaching the Van Diemen Gulf, but will still drop in excess of 75mm of rain around the communities of Maningrida and Galiwinku. This is the second major cyclone that has belted the Top End this season, with the last one being Severe Tropical Cyclone Lam. While Tropical Cyclone Nathan isn't nearly as intense as Lam, residents living from Nhulunbuy to Port Roper including Cape Shield, Groote Eylandt and Numbulwar should make final preparations to their home or shelter.
