Tropical Cyclone Laurence: never say die

Sam Terry
After a slow trek from the Arafura Sea as a tropical low, then its development into a category 5 tropical cyclone in the Timor Sea, Tropical Cyclone Laurence has had a long and eventful life. Today Laurence weakened to just another tropical low again, but is this the end? Tropical Cyclone Laurence has helped to bring between 200 to 500 millimetres of rainfall to the NT Top End and WA Kimberley, in some places the wettest December in over a decade. Troughton Island (in WA) alone recorded 313 mm to 9am this morning, its wettest day in 23 years. Despite the downgrading of Laurence the widespread heavy rain is set to continue across the northern part of WA. However, there may be a resurrection at hand. The tropical low is expected to head back offshore and re-develop as a Tropical Cyclone, as sometimes happens. This could mean a wind-and-rain filled weekend for the Pilbara coast.
