Wet weather has led to tram problems in Adelaide.

The trams were not operating through the city to North Terrace in the city during the morning because light rain and residue made the rails slippery.

The Transport Department said some city trams stopped at Victoria Square as a precaution.

A spokesman said tram tracks exposed to rain after a dry spell could be slippery, just as roads could.

It is anticipated that heavier rainfall will wash down the tracks and stabilise the operating conditions.

One citybound commuter says it was not explained why he had to get off at South Terrace.

"The tram stopped oh before South Terrace to tell us (sic) there was trouble with the trams in the city - we didn't know what and then we were dumped off at South Terrace and that's all we knew," he said.

"So I've caught a tram home just to get out of the rain."
