Thundery Thursday for southeast QLD

Thundery Thursday for southeast QLD
Thunderstorms triggered by a trough brought a dramatic change to the previously settled weather in southeast Queensland. At Archerfield, heavy rain came with the storms, with 19mm falling in ten minutes in the afternoon. With an eventual total of 32 millimetres, making this the heaviest September fall in six years. At Redcliffe, nine millimetres fell in the gauge in ten minutes. These storms also brought damaging wind gusts, with Oakey recording a gust of 106km/h in the early afternoon. Dalby also recorded strong winds associated with the storms, clocking an 87km/h gust. It wasn't just the wind and rain that made these storms so spectacular, with hail the size of golf-balls were reported in South Brisbane. Parts of New South Wales were similarly affected by these storms, with many parts of Sydney also reporting lightning and hail. However, extremes like these are not likely to be repeated within the next couple of weeks. This trough is currently heading offshore with a high pressure ridge building rapidly behind it bringing about a lovely week of calm and fine weather for a majority of the state.
