Thousands without power after storm hits SE Qld

Wednesday December 3, 2008 - 21:28 EDT

The weather bureau says a band of severe storms moving across south-east Queensland will not last for long.

A storm warning is current for Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Redland and parts of the Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay, Scenic Rim and Somerset council regions.

The broad front is moving east and has already hit the Lockyer Valley, Amberley and Ipswich and most of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Senior forecaster Geoff Doueal the storms are heading out to sea.

"One sweep of this storm line it'll be through in the next hour or so, it is just moving pretty steadily from the south-west, there is nothing much behind it," he said.

Energex says more than 23,000 customers are without power across the south-east.

Areas affected include Brisbane's northern suburbs, Ipswich and surrounding areas, the Lockyer Valley and at Logan City and areas to the south of Brisbane.

Energex says crews are waiting for the storms to pass before they attempt to restore power.
