Tasmania Police have re-opened the Midland Highway to traffic, but are warning drivers to take extreme care.

The Highway was closed this morning due to snow and ice, but police say conditions have improved.

Cars and trucks had been banked up near Melton Mowbray, south of Oatlands, for at least a kilometre.

The main route to the west coast - the Lyell Highway - is now open to four wheel drive vehicles, as is the Marlborough Highway.

In the Central Highlands, the Lake Highway south of Deloraine is still closed.

Police say information about the closures is available on their website, and there's a hotline on 6230 2565.
