Tasmanian snow falling down low

Sam Terry, Wednesday August 13, 2008 - 17:57 EST

It was a cold and snow-filled day for much of Tasmania today, thanks to the passage of a cold front yesterday.

Over the course of the night, temperatures across southern and central parts fell well below average, with many towns getting at least four below average. This meant that snow was able to fall to very low levels, even to sea level. Reports from Bull Bay indicate that this was indeed true.

Further inland temperatures dipped below zero. Lake St Clair received about 20cm of snow to 9am this morning.

Tomorrow will see the cold remain, although perhaps not quite as severe as today. Snowfalls are also forecast, falling to a level of 1000 metres, with the heaviest snow falling over the west. Totals could reach 20cm.
