A trough and embedded low over the NSW coast is continuing to pour rain over the Sydney Basin.

Over the past week Sydney has seen some heavy rainfall and today has been no exception. This weather is due to a slow moving, moisture-laden trough persisting over eastern NSW with a blocking high in the southeast not allowing the trough to shift away.

The main spectacle of this system has been the rainfall. The rainfall totals until 9am this morning in Sydney (43mm) was the wettest since November last year (3.5 months). Furthermore, from 9am until 4:30pm today, Sydney has already seen 74 mm of rain.  This has caused Sydney's wettest weekend in about 3 years, with a total of 117 mm. Elsewhere in NSW, Gosford had its heaviest rainfall in 3 years in the 24 hours until 9am this morning with a staggering 124mm.

Along with the rainfall, wind speeds/gusts were significantly above average, adding to the cool temperatures. Sydney airport recorded a 50 km/h wind gust at 11am while Jervis Bay had a 57 km/h wind gust at 1pm.

Sydney had started off the morning at a cool 21 degrees but by midday, had cooled below 18 degrees. This cooling is a sign of the cooler weather to come.

As of yet, no storms have developed over Sydney but have occurred in places further north. However, thunderstorms cannot be ruled out for the next couple of days.

Fortunately, this gloomy weather is looking to ease over the next couple of days. Showers and thunderstorms are a chance for most days this coming week. However, a high pressure ridge begins to develop on Wednesday, pushing the trough further north and causing some more settled conditions for at least a couple of days.
