Sydney's hottest summer day in two years

Brett Dutschke
The first day of summer brought some heat to Sydney's CBD, and it was hotter than any day during last summer. It warmed to 31.1 degrees, six above average, also the hottest day in the city for a month. This 31 degree-day comes after a relatively cool November in which it remained cooler than 25 degrees for the last week of the month. November turned out to be fairly normal with day-time temperatures reaching 30 twice and averaging 23.6 degrees for the month, which is right on the long-term norm. Sydney airport was also hotter today than anytime last summer, reaching 32.3 degrees, also six above average. Inland suburbs did not achieve the same feat because northwesterly winds had gained extra warmth by the time they reached the coast. It reached 30 to 31 degrees inland, one to four above the December average maximum. A cooler change will arrive this evening bringing the temperature closer to average. It won't take long to warm up again as winds turn northerly in a few days. There is even a chance of reaching 30 degrees once more by the weekend.
