Sydney on target for warmest October spell in six years

04/10/2012: Sydney is bathing in its warmest October weather in four years and is on target for its warmest October spell in six years, according to weatherzone.com.au.

The city reached 30 degrees today after getting to 28 yesterday, making it the warmest October spell since 2008. In that October there were two consecutive days which reached 31 and 35 degrees.

With tomorrow looking as warm as today, Sydney is on target for its warmest October spell since 2006, when a 29-degree day was followed by 37-and-36-degree days.

We did have some hotter weather in October last year, as warm as the mid 30s but that was only one day and it was surrounded by 24-and-19-degree days.

A similar story can be told for western suburbs.

"Heat has been building over the inland for several days with help from plenty of sunshine, two ingredients which have been missing in the last few years. Northwesterly winds are now drawing that warm air to the coast and are strong enough to keep out cooling sea breezes for much of each day," Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.

The sunny warmth has got people flocking to parks and beaches in numbers not seen since last summer, when we last had this sort of weather.

"Unfortunately for those looking forward to a warm weekend, a cooler southerly wind change will arrive later on Friday. This change will be fairly strong on Friday afternoon, cooling the city rapidly to below 20 degrees with help from cloud and possible showers. Cloud and showers on Saturday will restrict the temperature to the low 20s. Sunday will be much sunnier and drier but winds will still be cool southerly," Dutschke said.

"We'll have to wait until mid next week to get some warm weather again, and that will not be as warm or as long-lasting as this current spell."
