Summer heat gone in a splash
Mount Isa's hottest start to summer on record came to a stormy end on Thursday afternoon.
The mining town is known for its heat, although this year's start to summer has been something else. The temperature climbed above 40 degrees during the first eight days of December, making it the hottest start to summer in 59 years of records.
The longest run of 40 degree days ever recorded at Mount Isa was 12, which occurred only twice in 1990 and 1983.
After topping out at a sweltering 43 degrees yesterday, storms rumbled through the town and brought welcome relief from the oppressive heart. The mercury plummeted by 14 degrees in an hour, while 15mm of rain gave kids a chance to celebrate with a good puddle-splashing session.
A cooler air mass sitting over western Queensland will keep maximum temperatures in the mid-thirties for at least the next week.
The hottest day ever recorded at Mount Isa was 45.9 degrees in January 1990.
