A low moving low pressure trough, fed by warm humid air, brought showers and thunderstorms across a wide area of Victoria yesterday.

Thunderstorms sparked up over the far southwest of the state during the morning, developing as the trough edged further east throughout the day.

Within 200km's of Maryborough there were just over 166,000 lighting strikes, just over 15,000 of which were ground strikes. Focusing on Melbourne, there were just over 9148 strikes (1010 of which were ground strikes), some of which were offshore.

Whilst decent rainfall accompanied these storms, some areas saw significantly more than others. One of the most notable rainfall totals was in Sheoaks, where 64mm of rain fell. Nearly all of this fell between 1.30pm and 3.30pm, with 27mm falling in just 30min. Other 24 hour totals include: Ferny Creek (41.0mm), Warragul (35.2mm), Scoresby (29mm), Latrobe Valley (26.8mm), Avalon (23.6mm), Puckapunyal-Lyon Hill (21.4mm), Westmere (19mm), Mt Buller (16.4mm) and Shepparton (15.2mm).

As the trough continues east today showers will ease in the west, lingering over parts of the east. Looking to the end of the weekend, eastern parts of the chance will see more showers, heaviest over the Gippsland, whilst the west will see clearer and more settled conditions.
