Storms drench Bendigo

Tuesday March 9, 2010 - 15:00 EDT

Residents in central and northern Victoria are mopping up after heavy rains and wild storms over the long weekend.

A violent storm that hit the Shepparton region on Sunday afternoon, brought down powerlines and uprooted trees.

But the rainfall total could not be recorded because the storm damaged the weather station.

Meanwhile in Bendigo, businesses and homes were damaged by flash flooding on Friday afternoon.

A senior forecaster at the weather bureau, Richard Carlyon, says over the three days Bendigo received more than twice its monthly average of rain.

"Heaviest rain was on the Friday where they had a fall of 40-45 millimetres, but they still had further storms and rain through Saturday and Sunday and they had 86mm over that three day period, so very high rainfall, about twice the monthly average for March," he said.
