A storm has caused significant damage in the Great Southern Shire of Dumbleyung, but authorities say no one has been injured.

The storm hit widespread areas of the Great Southern this afternoon, with most of the damage occurring inland near Dumbleyung and Gnowangerup.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority says it has received nearly 40 calls for help, mainly for damaged homes and fallen trees.

The storm also lifted the roof of the local school.

Jamie Dare from the Shire of Dumbleyung says everyone is accounted for.

"As far as we know no injuries at all and everyone's been handling themselves quite well which given the early stages is quite good," he said. "

There's quite a few powerlines down in dangerous positions, everyone was right onto it so thanks to all the local RFS and everyone else."

FESA says it won't know the full extent of the damage until tomorrow morning.
