Storm damage closes five schools

Tuesday March 9, 2010 - 08:00 EDT

Five schools will be closed in Melbourne and in the Shepparton area today because of damage caused by the weekend storms.

In Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and parts of Essendon Keilor College will be closed.

Gowrie Street Primary School and Wunghnu Primary School in Shepparton will also be closed.

Wanganui Park Secondary College in Shepparton will only be open for years 11 and 12.

The deputy secretary of the Education Department, Tony Cook says the schools will reopen when the buildings are completely safe.

"We're looking to assess just the safety of those ceilings. There's broken windows and glass in some of the schools due to the hail and also there's branches down from trees," he said.

"It's probably fair to say there's sustained damage across each of those schools. And staff and our clean-up crews are looking to assess that damage as quickly as possible so we can reopen the schools."
