Residents in Sydney's west and south-west are facing a big clean-up this morning, after thunderstorms brought strong winds, heavy rain and hail to the area yesterday afternoon.

Thunderstorms swept through the outer western Sydney suburbs of Penrith, Mount Druitt and Ingleburn on Thursday afternoon.

The Carnes Hill Shopping Centre was evacuated after the storm caused part of the roof to collapse.

More than 7,500 homes in the Campbelltown and Penrith areas were without power during the worst of the storm, and this morning around 50 remained disconnected near Ingleburn.

Endeavour Energy says 4,000 homes are without hot water.

The State Emergency Service received 215 calls for help, and spokesman Todd Burns says most were for fallen trees and powerlines and roof damage.

He said the storms were fast moving but did plenty of damage, with trees being blown down by winds which reached 107 kilometres per hour.
