Southeast Queensland cops another drenching

Daniel Howe, Wednesday February 6, 2008 - 18:28 EDT

Thunderstorms and heavy showers developed again over southeast Queensland today, though they should ease tomorrow, according to weatherzone.com.au.

A line of storms from Charleville to Moree resulted in some heavy bursts of rain. Inglewood in the southern Darling Downs collected 13 millimetres in 10 minutes, the kind of rate typically experienced much further north.

In the Brisbane catchments, Wivenhoe picked up another 32mm to 9am today, raising the total storage to 32 per cent, almost double the level 6 months ago. Parts of Brisbane?s south had a dumping of over 50mm in less than one hour on Wednesday afternoon, causing flash flooding.

The storms have been triggered by the combination of a low pressure trough and a cold pool of air in the upper atmosphere. Showers and storms will ease in the southeast tomorrow as the surface trough shifts further east.
