Snowfalls set to welcome first week of ski season

04/06/2009: The 2009 ski season is set to get off to a promising start with snowfalls forecast throughout next week, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Snow will start falling across the resorts during Sunday, before becoming more widespread and persistent into the holiday Monday. The new 14-day snow forecast available on weatherzone.com.au indicates the likelihood of 10 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow falling on Sunday and Monday.

"A sharp wave of cold air is approaching southeast Australia. This cold air will interact with moisture that has been lingering across the region over the last week to generate snow showers above about 1300 metres from Sunday onwards," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

"The good news is that it is looking like this pattern will set in for a while. A succession of cold fronts are lining up to cross southern Australia over the next fortnight, so all indicators are pointing towards persistent snow showers into the foreseeable future."

There are even early signs of the cold air sweeping well north during next week, with the potential for a dusting of snow along the central New South Wales ranges and possibly even as far as the Northern Tablelands.

Frosts are also likely to become more of a feature through next week as brief calm spells between fronts allow overnight temperatures to plunge.
