Heavy snow and gale force winds are buffeting Victoria's Alpine resorts.
Police are sending traffic through in convoys on the Great Alpine Road, between Mt Hotham and Harrietville.
The temperature at Mt Hotham is about minus five Celsius and the wind speed meter at the summit has stopped recording.
Superintendent Peter DeSanto says motorists can expect long delays on their way to the snow resorts today.
"Your vehicle must be in good roadworthy condition and good tread on your tyres," he said.
"Diamond pattern chains will only be allowed on the mountain today under the severe conditions.
"Trailers will not be permitted and that you abide by the directions of the people doing the traffic management."
