Many Tasmanians awoke to the sight of snow, due to the passing of another cold front. The highlands have seen plenty of snow, including 8cm reported at Lake St Clair. However, the main story is not snow on the highlands, but snow falling to low levels. Residents in Hobart could look to Mt Wellington this morning to see snow as low as 400 metres. This led authorities to close the road up to the top of the mountain. There have been a few reports of snow in the air as low as 300 metres and one report of snowflakes down to 120 metres. Snow will be melting about these lower levels in the next few days as the upcoming fronts due on Friday night and Sunday morning won't bring air nearly cold enough to produce snow below 600 metres. The next chance of snow to these low levels will be behind the strong front arriving on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning the airmass should be cold enough to see snow down to very similar levels with moist southwesterly winds.
