New Zealand police say a severe storm has killed three people in Auckland and injured others.

Residents in the west of New Zealand's biggest city have reported seeing a tornado, but weather bureau officials believe a line of thunderstorms was to blame.

Pictures show trees ripped from the ground and debris strewn across the road.

Forecasters say a second round of thunderstorms will hit the city shortly.

The army and emergency services have been called in to help with the clean up.
