SES warns of flood threat

Friday July 3, 2009 - 06:49 EST

The State Emergency Service (SES) is warning people of possible flooding because of recent rain.

There has been more than 140 millimetres of rain in parts of the region this week, especially in north-east Victoria, and more is expected today.

A flood watch notice has been issued for upstream of the Hume Dam and the Mitta Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens and King River catchments.

SES duty officer Jason Hough says people in flood prone areas should take precautions now.

"If there is water levels rising, they should not walk through those waters or ride or drive through those floodwaters, they shouldn't allow children to be playing in or near the floodwater, certainly stay away from any waterways or stormwater drains and to keep well clear of any fallen powerlines," he said.
