SES prepares for north coast weather to worsen

Tuesday February 19, 2013 - 12:40 EDT

The region's emergency services are preparing for another big rain event later in the week.

Weather Bureau modelling show there is a chance for an east coast low to form and track down the coast from around Thursday.

The Bureau has issued a flood watch for possible flooding in all coastal river catchments from the Tweed to the Hunter.

Clarence-Nambucca SES spokeswoman Caroline Ortel said catchments are still sodden from recent floods.

She said the SES is getting ready.

"We're putting our plans in place and reviewing what's needed in our areas to make sure that our people are resourced appropriately," she said

"Considering that for the Clarence/Nambucca region we've recently just experienced a flood and storm event so we're making sure that all our volunteers are resourced and in a position that they're ready to go again.

"We've used a lot of sandbags and a lot of equipment over the last few weeks.

"So just making sure that everything's put back in place and everyone's prepared."

Local SES crews are preparing for an east coast low predicted to hit the region later week.

The Bureau says the system could track differently, but there's potential for strong winds and upwards of 200 millimetres of rain across the region from Thursday.

Ms Ortel says local crews are making sure they are ready in case of the worst.

"There's a lot of water still lying around, a lot of wet patches still in the local area but also the ground is saturated," she said.

"So we're conscious of that while we're looking at what is being proposed to us and considering that areas will not be able to take as much rain as they did previously before flooding starts.

"This is a regular event I guess an East Coast Low on the mid north coast and we'll be putting our normal plans in place for that."
