SES finishes storm clean-up

Monday February 8, 2010 - 10:37 EDT

The State Emergency Service (SES) says it has completed the clean-up after a storm lashed the Illawarra, the Shoalhaven and the Southern Highlands.

The SES received 160 calls for assistance throughout the region after Friday's storm, which brought heavy rain and lightning.

Most of the call-outs were for assistance with fallen trees and for flooding caused by water entering roofs due to blocked drains.

An SES spokeswoman, Robyn Huer, says the weather abated over the weekend, with the rest of the outstanding jobs completed last night.

Meanwhile, steady rainfall has quenched dairy farms on the south coast and in the Southern Highlands.

Kangaloon farmer John Watman says 225 millimetres, or nine inches on the old scale, has fallen on his property since last week.

He says his dams are full and the rain has left his property near Robertson well-positioned for the rest of the year.

"It's been dry for too long and this rain has probably been the best in the last five years for this time of the year."

Mr Watman says the rain has given him reassurance about the viability of his farm.

"The growth's been terrific actually. All the dams seem to be full, springs are running well. We'd probably like to see three or four days fine weather then another three, four inches," he said.
