The Maryborough State Emergency Service (SES) says there is an urgent need to recruit volunteers for flood-prone areas.

Just three members service the Fraser Coast areas of Tiaro and Glenwood, down from nine this time last year.

Area coordinator Helen Scott says the area is notorious for flooding.

"We do have a problem with flooding, we did have some earlier in the year because we've had above average rainfall during the year," she said.

"So there can be an issue but obviously coming up to summer with storms it could create a problem."

She says new volunteers need to begin training immediately to get up to speed in time for the summer storm season.

"Desperate, it is critical ... and coming onto the summer season and the storm season it is critical that I get members trained up just to do the basics," she said.

"I could probably get them up to the basics ... within a couple of months or so.

"We just ... need the community support."
