Roads still closed in Central Australia

Thursday November 20, 2008 - 11:37 EDT

The Department of Planning and Infrastructure estimates about half of all Central Australian roads are still closed because of heavy rain during the past two days.

The Stuart Highway is still partly under water, Namatjira Drive is closed because of surface damage and the Mereenie Loop road is only open as far as Areyonga.

Glen Auricht from the department is urging motorists to check road conditions.

"There may be another 20 percent of the road networks which are the smaller other feeder roads to stations may be still isolated because the main roads are closed still," he said.
