Report counts cost of Shepparton floods

Monday August 20, 2012 - 14:11 EST

A report into the floods earlier this year has found an estimated 250 homes were damaged in the Greater Shepparton Council area.

In late February, heavy rain fell across north-east Victoria, affecting several shires.

Over the initial 24-hour period, 42 millimetres was measured at the Shepparton Airport, with a further 73mm recorded during the following days.

The worst affected areas in the Greater Shepparton area were the towns of Tallygaroopna, Congupna and Katandra West.

Within Greater Shepparton, about 1,000 households were affected and council spent about $150,000 on salaries for response, relief and recovery.

Infrastructure costs at this point in time are about $250,000 and works on roads, bridges and culverts, as well as repairs to council assets damaged by the floods, are anticipated to increase up to $1 million.

The report will be tabled at the Greater Shepparton Council meeting tomorrow.
