Relief on the way for Tasmania
Temperatures across TAS have soared well above average over the last
two days leading to dangerous fire conditions. However, there is some
relief in sight as a cold front sweeps through the state on Saturday.
Yesterday, large parts of the state were between five and ten degrees
above average for this time of year, with some locations in the south
climbing into the mid 30's.
Temperatures are again soaring today, with Hobart hitting 30
degrees and parts of eastern TAS climbing into the 30's. The heat has
been combining with dry northwesterly winds, allowing the fire danger
to be severe in places.
This has led to a number of fires breaking out, with a particularly
dangerous fire northwest of Hobart at Molesworth where there is an
emergency warning. A Total Fire Ban has remains in force for the
Southern and Northern regions until midnight tonight.
The situation has not been helped with most of the state receiving
well below average rainfall for summer. Hobart has received just
33.4mm over December and January combined, which is only around one
third of its average over this period.
There are signs of relief on the way from Saturday as a cold front
sweeps through during the afternoon or evening. This is likely to be
accompanied by a few showers and a significant drop in temperature.
The air mass may even be cold enough to bring some snow to the
highlands. Unfortunately the system will not contain much rain, with
no more than 5mm expected, except for parts of the West Coast where up
to 10mm is possible.
Temperatures will be close to average into the new week, however there
indications of further heat mid-week, with no signs of significant
rainfall.
