Record warm September in Adelaide

Rob Sharpe, Tuesday September 24, 2013 - 14:47 EST

Adelaide seems almost a month ahead of itself, with a record warm September near the October average.

If you feel like its been warm in Adelaide recently, you are right. This September is now likely to be the warmest September since records began.

The reason for the warmth in Adelaide has been an exceptionally hot start to spring over central Australia - the source of Adelaide's heat. This heat has been filtering into Adelaide via northerly winds, combatting the cold from the south.

The final week of September will be a mixed bag with a few cooler days, but record minima and maxima are still likely. Maximum temperatures are likely to average 22 degrees at the end of the month. This is half a degree more than the record set in 1944 and almost exactly the same as the October average.

Nights have also been exceptionally warm, with minima likely to average 12.5 degrees at the end of the month, more than a degree above the record set in 1973 at 11.1 degrees.

The recent warm weather will get whisked away by a cool change arriving late on Wednesday. This will also provide showers and gusty winds. The cooler airmass with it will limit heating on Thursday to a meagre 18 degrees despite a mostly sunny afternoon.

Friday will rise to 22 degrees ahead of another late change, keeping the mercury below 19 degrees during Saturday.

Warmer temperatures will then return for the last day of the month on Monday 30th, bringing signs of a very warm October.
