Rain damage to central Australian roads could cost up to 8 million dollars to repair - ABC

The Northern Territory's Infrastructure Department says it will cost $8 million to fix road damage from recent rain in central Australia and the Barkly.

A department spokesman, Henry Szczypiorski, says some roads including the Ross Highway remain closed because sections have collapsed.

He says it could take months to restore the road network to its pre-flood condition.

"Right now we have almost every single contractor available to us undertaking grading work throughout our network," he said.

"I'm sure the Tennant Creek region is exactly the same, so it's a program thing.

"We also have capital works that are still continuing ... so we're stretched to the limit right now. It'll be programmed, it'll be prioritised and we'll make every effort to get this done as soon as we possibly can."
