Pulse of heat threatens NSW

Alex Krisman
The NSW rural fire service will be keeping a watchful eye on the weather this week, as an inbound heat pulse threatens to exacerbate already severe conditions. A number of bush fires are currently burning our of control near Bathurst today, while much of the state has a total fire ban in force. Unfortunately, the weather will continue to deteriorate over the weekend, with hot northwesterly winds becoming established by Monday. This will see the mercury soar across the state, reaching maximum intensity on Tuesday when it will nudge into the low 40's for some inland locations. This will lead to total fire bans across large parts of the state and a highly volatile environment for any fires that emerge. Although conditions will ease a little on Wednesday, fire danger will not subside until after Friday, when a more substantial change is due to direct cooler southerly winds across the state. However, even a cool wind change can bring its own set of challenges for fire fighters, as fire-fronts can suddenly change tack.
