New research has found the mid north coast centres of Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour are among the two of the most hail-prone centres in the country.

A major home insurance company analysed its national insurance data at the end of the storm season to compile a list of Australia's most hail-prone cities.

Armidale came out on top, with Port Macquarie second, and Coffs Harbour fourth.

Both Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour had a number of serious hail incidents over the recent Summer, with hundreds of homes and cars damaged.

Southport on the Gold Coast and Forest Lake in Brisbane rounded out the Budget Direct top five.
