Pilbara's hottest day of the year

Rob Sharpe, Thursday November 15, 2012 - 18:23 EDT

Heat has been sitting over Western Australia's Pilbara for many days, but a morning land breeze has helped the temperature reach the mid forties today, the hottest day of the year so far in Roebourne and Karratha.

It got as hot as 45.9 degrees at Roebourne airport, seven degrees above average. This was its hottest day since it hot 49 dgerees in December last year.

Karratha had its hottest November day in five years, reaching 43.6 degrees, nine above average.

Less than 200km east along the coast, Port Hedland only got to 34 degrees due to a northerly sea breeze all day.

A small low pressure system just off the coast drover the cooler northerly sea breezes to Port Hedland but directed hot southerly winds off the desert to Roebourne and Karratha.

This wasn't the only part of the country to experience its hottest day of the year.

Northern New South Wales and southern Queensland are also sweltering, with Moree and Inverell recaording their highest temperature in 365 days. In Queensland there is a fire weather warning for many districts due to hot temperatures, dry conditions and fresh-to-strong winds. It got to 43 degrees in Birdsville.
