Winter has hit Perth with a shock after temperatures dipped to 4.7 degrees Celsius, making this morning the coldest day of the year so far.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster James Ashley said the tail end of a large cold front, which tore through the state earlier in the week, has sent the mercury diving.

"The weather's really turned from a fairly benign autumn, we've hit winter with vengeance," he said.

"It's been quite wet and now we've got the cold air as well.

"Generally with cold fronts, hence their name, they signal the arrival of cold air and obviously some cold fronts bring cooler air than others, and this was one that was particularly cold."

Coldest day in nine years

Mr Ashley said cloud cover yesterday trapped cool air in the metro area and led to a maximum of just 14.1C at 4:11pm, which made it the coldest day since June 23, 2009.

He said the disappearance of that cloud overnight led to this morning providing the coolest minimum Perth has seen so far in 2018.

"Yesterday it wasn't just the cold air, it was the fact that it rained so much and there was so much cloud around it just didn't let the cold air warm up," Mr Ashley said.

"But once the … blanket of cloud goes it allows the ground to really cool down."

Temperatures dipped so low overnight parts of Perth and elsewhere in the state were briefly blanketed in thick fog.

Today is expected to be sunnier, allowing for a maximum of 18C.

With warmer northerly winds expected tomorrow, Perth is looking at a maximum of 21C.

The reprieve is likely to be short-lived however, with an approaching frontal system expected to bring wet weather over the weekend.

Perth weather forecast
Saturday: Possible thunderstorm, 21
Sunday: Possible thunderstorm, 20
Monday: Mostly sunny, 18
Tuesday: Possible shower, 18
Wednesday: Possible shower, 18
Thursday: Mostly sunny, 19
